We went to Balboa Park to explore a Botanical Gardens structure that caught our eye a while ago. It looks like a giant birdcage palace looming over a courtyard. Its rusty patina tells of a structural dignity that is rare today, of a time when form and function were melded, rather than just a fascade.
Inside were beautiful plants, such as ornamental figs, pink polka dottedĀ Hypoestes, and a dazzling array of carniverous plants. I’m particularly drawn to pitcher plants, as their existence befuddles me.
Below you’ll see a display of all of those and more, including a turtle wandering outside of the pools outside of the garden and a shot of the tower dome’s stepladder on the roof. It looks like an archetectural feature on the dome, but those ridges are actually steps for maintenance and cleaning. Terrifying. Simply terrifying.
