Lessons

I gave up commercial photography ages ago. I found I much prefer photography as a passion rather than a business. From the weddings I’ve photographed to the client needs, I learned a lot about how to apply my skills.

Now I’m willing to share my skills and teach all I know. Whether it’s the basics of how to get the best image from your smartphone, how to frame a photograph, or how to set up complex lighting scenarios, I can get you on your way.

So many people take hundreds of photos and cull their favorites from that. My photo sessions are usually about 70 frames taken, instead of the 300+ that many take. I compose in camera, take what we need, adjust, and finalize. It’s a wonderful process and, when done right, becomes almost meditative. It’s a more collaborative approach, and can be tailored for the hobbyist and professional, alike.

* Sessions are up to 90 minutes, depending on student’s comprehension of subject matter.
** Lessons are able to be customized to suit your needs. Contact us for help.

Beginner Photography
This is your basic course to up your game and start creating photographs instead of taking pictures. Plan for 90 minutes over two days. I’ll ask you to have some practice time between the two days. This is a great course for smartphone photographers, Instagram couples, or point and shoot camera photographers.

The first session will cover the first five sections, from the Rule of Thirds through Portrait Framing Basics. This is to provide you with a working foundation of what goes into a photo. I’m not about memorization, but an applicable knowledge of “I want this, so I need to do this.”

The second session will be a review of your practice photos with constructive feedback (not criticism, just help to get you to create and capture what you want) and a dive into self portrait and selfie techniques.

Course outline is:

  • Rule of Thirds
  • Exposure triangle
  • How to frame a photo
  • Landscape framing basics
  • Portrait framing basics
  • Self portrait (formal) techniques
  • Selfie (informal) techniques
  • 2x 90 minute sessions*

This is a perfect course for two kinds of people: the hypermobile artist and the person who wants to take the right photo as quickly as possible so they can get back to experiencing the moment.

Intermediate Photography
This is a more expansive course which takes the basic course and builds upon it. It is geared toward point and shoot users and DSLR and mirrorless camera photographers, especially those who just got their camera or have been tinkering with it for too long and want to finally figure it out.

Course outline is:

  • Rule of thirds
  • Exposure triangle
  • How to frame a photo
  • RAW vs. JPG
  • Lens selection
  • Landscape framing techniques
  • Portrait framing techniques
  • F-Stop considerations
  • Depth of Field considerations
  • ISO (ASA) speed considerations
  • Shutter speed considerations
  • 4x 90 minute sessions*

This is going to be a perfect fit for someone who wants to take the best photos they can of their pets and/or family. New parents or those with new cameras will benefit greatly, as they’ll be able to take near-professional quality photos of their children or pets. This is also a perfect fit for hikers, trekkers, or trippers who find themselves in gorgeous areas that they want to document.

All the framing techniques tie into each other, which is why I do not offer separate portrait and landscape courses.

This is for the person who has images in their head and needs a way to get them out, fast, It’s for the person who found a new passion and wants to jump in feet first. This will give you an incredible working body of knowledge. I don’t want you to just have theories and book smarts; I want you to have these techniques ingrained into your artistic bones and be ready to use them reflexively.

Model Module
This is one of my two add-on courses.

One of the things people really want to do is work with models, whether amateur or professional. I’ve done both, in fact, one of the first women I’ve worked with is now signed with Wilhelmina, and I’ve worked with a number of other professional and countless amateur models.

Some of what we’ll be covering:

  • 1, 2, 3 plane posing for men and women
  • Body lines
  • Natural lighting for people
  • Artificial lighting for people
  • Image compression and application
  • Most common oversights when working with people

This is made to unlock your human creative side. You’ll need a strong knowledge of the topics in the Intermediate Course: which include.

  • Rule of thirds
  • Exposure triangle
  • How to frame a photo
  • Landscape framing techniques
  • Portrait framing techniques
  • F-Stop considerations
  • Depth of Field considerations
  • ISO (ASA) speed considerations
  • Shutter speed considerations
  • 1x 90 minute session, 1x 3 hour session*

This is done in a two part series. The first part is 90 minutes, the second is up to three hours. The first is in just us, the second is with a live model and the style of non-nude photoshoot you want.

Editing Module
This is my second add-on module. It’s designed to help enhance your photos and avoid some all too common errors, namely over saturation.

Editing is critical in the development of a photograph. Before digital photography, this would be a hands on course in a darkroom with various chemicals. Now it’s all on a computer, but it’s even more complicated than it was before. This is the process that turns great photographs into exquisite art and good pictures into great photos. It’s also the process that can take great photos and turn them into laughable images. It’s imperative editing is done right.

In this course I will teach you the basics of Lightroom and Photoshop, including

  • RAW image processing
  • Color balancing (natural and for effect)
  • Sharpening
  • Using a histogram
  • Curves, levels, and other layers
  • Print optimizing
  • Web optimizing
  • 1x 90 minute session

I cannot recommend taking this enough. It will benefit photographers of all but the most advanced levels, and my techniques are approachable to even the most beginner levels of photographers.
